Jack 4 month Stats

Jack went to visit Dr. Havlik yesterday.  We had a good visit!  Jack only screamed for a second when he got his shots and otherwise was his typical happy self.

Here are his stats.
Weight:  17 lbs 4 oz. (88%)
Height: 26.25 in (88%)
Head: 42.6 cm (57%)

Developmental Questions.
Can he hold his own head up?  Yes
Can he stand when held at the chest?  Yes
Can he follow an object from one side of the room to another?  Yes
Does his smile and giggle at you?  Yes
Can he look at or does he gaze at his hands?  Yes
Is he rolling over?  No (But, he is trying really hard to sit up.  When propped on pillows, he pulls himself up to sitting by doing this super crunch thing.  He instantly tips over, of course, but he definitely has strong stomach muscles.)

Other things worth noting.

  • He gets to start solid foods now (but not until I make it to the grocery store).  Dr. Havlik's rule is only introduce a new food every 4 days in order to watch for food allergies.
  • Jack is cute!
  • Jack has so much ear wax that Dr. Havlik didn't get a good look at his ears, but since he has no symptoms of ear infections, there was no need to use the painful ear scraper that he uses on Molly.  (I was a little curious to see Jack's reaction if he would have used it.  That way I would have known how bad it really is since it makes Molly scream.)
  • Molly comparison - At 4 months, Jack has now finally passed up Molly by 1 pound, but she was still taller than him by a quarter of an inch. (What's weird is that Molly's weigh put her in the 98th percentile and Jack at a pound heavier is at the 88th percentile.  I didn't realize it was that different for boys and girls at this age.)  Also, Jack and Molly have/had small heads at this point in percentile terms, but Molly's head has always looked big to me and Jack's head does look small to me.  Oh well.  Whatever.

Here are some comparison pictures.

Jack - 4 months

Jack is 4 months old!

He is cute and usually very happy!  He loves his sister and his grandparents.  He likes going to cousin Maddie's every day.  He giggles and talks a lot.  He's started to turn circles in his bed at night, but doesn't quite roll over.  He tries really hard to sit up on his own and likes to do these sit-up things in his car seat, trying to see the world around him.

On days when I pick him up from Maddie's, he is so excited to see Molly when he gets in the car.  They both giggle at each other all the way home.  Molly often mauls him, but recently he has started getting revenge by grabbing a fist full of her hair when she gets too close.  She cries.  I just tell her sorry, but she should stop bugging him.

He eats his hands constantly.  My mom thinks he may be getting teeth in, but I've yet to feel or see any.  He is just really hungry.  He goes to the doctor this week and will likely be okay-ed to start on cereal. Maybe that will help.  I'm interested to see what he weighs.  He is a tank (especially compared to his new cousin and 2nd cousin, who both have way more hair than he does).

Football

Football Game Recaps Courtesy of Mama Judy:

Game #4 - Losing Team -- Hunter Zip (0) Davis 23

Oh my!  What a game!  This week's football game was cursed from the beginning -- Parker lost in the sophomore class election; Marie Sharapova lost at the US Open; and . . . Hunter could not get their offense or defense going.  The kids appeared to me to have flat energy -- basically they didn't have the excitement and momentum like other weeks.  The game was filled with penalties, interceptions, and lost opportunities.  Had we not thrown interceptions and capitalized on a few Davis penalties the outcome may have been different.  I really think Davis is overrated -- not a top 5 team in the state.  Our kids actually handled them pretty well but not without some injuries -- knees, ankles, tail bones, pride, and more . . . .

This week Hunter has a bye.  That means a time to heal injuries and take time to sort through the offense and the defense to put a good game plan together for the next game -- Friday, September 21 @ West High.

On a positive note, the weather was absolutely beautiful -- perfect football game watching weather.  Willie had a strong cheering section and the studentbody showed up dressed for a "blackout" game.  It was fun!

Game #5 - Winning Team - Hunter 41 West 3

What a great night for a football game!  Hunter HS wolverines played in the middle of Salt Lake City at Salt Lake High School West (now some 122 years as a public high school).  The field and stands were decorated in black and red, but Hunter pretty much ruined the West High Homecoming 2012! (Follow the link for details in a Deseret News article.)

Our Hunter football team came onto the field in control of the game from the opening kickoff - scoring in the first 3 minutes!  It was a great game and I am so proud of the kids for keeping their behavior in check and playing a well orchestrated game (only two penalties).

On a sad note -- Hunter's #1 running back/fullback, Hyrum Purcell, went out of the game with a serious knee injury.  Hopefully, he'll be back soon -- he is amazing and the team needs him.

Game #6 - Winning Team - Hunter 34  Granger 14

What a week!  HHS Homecoming and all of the activites made for a very exciting but very demanding and busy week.  The highlight for the people who live in my house was the football game on Friday night and a sweet victory.

(here is an article from the Deseret News with Willie's name in it)

Hunter head coach Scott Henderson said he didn't say anything special at halftime, but he believed much of the first-half issues stemmed from too much emotion.
"We were just kind of not doing the right things," said Henderson. "We kept going the wrong way; running the plays the wrong way. ... This is a big rivalry and the kids were just hyped up, and it took us a while to get calmed down.
"They play with so much emotion; I love this team so much because they play with that emotion, especially against Granger. This is a great rivalry. And Granger played good."

Senior offensive lineman Willie Peterson said the start was a little frustrating, but the team was determined to change the energy of the game.
"We came out with a whole new fire in us in that second half," he said. "We were a different team out there; we felt it."
Henderson was proud of the fight his team showed in every aspect of the game. He acknowledged he's lucky to have the depth he does, especially at running back.
"I'm so blessed to have the depth at running back, the depth at line, and defensively, these kids just love it" Henderson said. "They love to hit and take care of business."

Autumn Leaves

On Saturday we ventured to Cache Valley and Box Elder County.  The autumn leaves in Sardine Canyon are beautiful.  Here are some pictures.

We met James' mom and dad in Logan and they took us to lunch at this good sandwich bakery place called Apples Spice Cafe.  It was tasty and the chocolate chip cookies were delicious.  We headed back to their house for the afternoon.

Despite the long hours in the car, Molly and Jack were both pretty good all day!  We had a fun time.

When Dogs Attack

Thursday morning James got bit by a dog at a patient's home.  He said the dog doesn't like him and has snapped at him several times before, but on this particular morning came bounding towards the door and grabbed onto his hand.  He bandaged it up and finished the visit.  Then went to a few other appointments.

Later that afternoon he ended up at the Workman's Comp Clinic and was told that he likely tore a tendon and that he would need to go see a plastic surgeon to repair it.

Friday morning he went to the plastic surgeon and was told that he needed to have it operated on . . . now.  He went from the doctor's office at Salt Lake Regional to the operating room at IMC.  They had to put him totally under and the surgery lasted one hour and 15 minutes.  He was in recovery for a while, super groggy. The doctor came and talked to me and said they had cut him open between his pinky and ring finger to clean out all of the infection and to take a culture.  He did have a torn tendon, but that could not be repaired until the infection cleared up.  The doctor is hopeful that by simply opening it and cleaning it, the tissues in the tendon will start to heal themselves.  If not, his hand will be opened up again and some later date to repair the tendon.

I had another teacher cover half of my last class.  While waiting for James I contacted the daycare and they were willing to keep Molly for a little bit longer than usual.  I contacted Maddie and she was fine to keep Jack for a little longer, too.  We left the hospital by 4:30 or so Friday afternoon, got Molly, got Jack, got prescriptions, then headed home.  James slept all evening long and the other 3 of us, once he was taken care of, headed to the football game.

He felt better on Saturday, but may have overdone it and has had a rough Sunday.

It hurts.  It's a pain (meaning the feeling and the inconvenience).  He can't do a whole lot.  (After several attempts, I did get his tie tied right this morning.  It wasn't that I couldn't tie it, but that we kept misjudging the length.  Oh well.)  It's his left hand and he is left handed.  He's supposed to return to work on "light duty" tomorrow, but I don't exactly know what he's going to do.  We'll see.

I don't know what is or what did happen to the dog.  He said the dog's owners reaction was, "I'm glad he bit you.  Now we know he's a good guard dog."  I don't think they have any idea the extent of the injury.

(Thursday night after the first doctor visit)
(No, the little baby underneath Molly is not Jack.)

(Saturday afternoon, the day after being operated on)

Holy Cow there are 9!

Petersen Family Bi-monthly Birthday Party tonight at Aunt Karen's house.

9 whoppin' great grand kids.

Elliott is the oldest at 5, then Hyrum, Wyatt, Molly, Kate, and Braidyn.  The babies are Jack, then 1 month old Quinn and 1 week old Milo.

There are only 11 grandkids in this family, so to have 9 great grandkids already is crazy!  My grandma was so excited when Elliott came along, but he's the only one she ever met in this life.  I'm sure she would be so overjoyed and proud of all of these little squirts.

Oh, and one more thing.  Girls?!? . . . totally outnumbered.  Molly and Kate can definitely hold their own in this group, though.
