Violence at the doctor's office

"I've never seen a child react so violently to me looking at their ears before," said Dr. Child, the Ear Nose and Throat doctor at Molly's ear tube check up this week. She screamed. She whipped around. It took 3 of us to hold her down, but that wasn't even enough. "It's like trying to see into an earthquake," was his next comment.

All he was trying to do was look in her ears with the normal otoscope. It was nothing invasive or painful. It was just Molly!!

After a minute or so, he sent us down the hall to some type of pressure booth. It still took 3 of us to hold her down, but apparently the pressure gauge thing doesn't require as much accuracy as the otoscope, so he could get the information he wanted without actually seeing in her ears.

The verdict: Infection. Ugh. She hasn't had an infection or required any drops since one right after she got the tubes in. I hadn't even noticed any green goo coming out of her ears this time.

"Do you think she'll let you put drops in her ears?," was the doctor's question to me. Um . . . I doubt it. Didn't you just see how she reacted? "Ok, then I'll give you a prescription for drops." Thanks. "I'll also give you a prescription for an oral antibiotic in case the drops don't go well."

We've been trying the drops, but not as diligently as the prescription calls for. James cradles her against him and I put the drops in. She screams. If we're both not around, we can't do it. I tried to sit on top of her on the floor one day, but my extra hand was holding her flailing arms and I need a third hand to hold her head. Ugh. I feel like we're terrible parents. Oh well. What do we do?

Football and Playoffs

After a terribly slow start to the season, Hunter High School football has actually made it to the playoffs. How? It's quite crazy actually. They played Viewmont on Wednesday night and shouldn't have won, but pulled it off. Viewmont was and still is the first placed team in the region, but 1) I don't think they were really ready to play and 2) Hunter came out with what seemed like a different team than we've watched all season and played out of their heads. They scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff and never looked back.

Unfortunately, the tall, handsome left tackle, then center fill-in, then right tackle didn't get to play in this high energy game. He was stuck on the sidelines recovering from a brief, but monstrous illness that wiped him out. He got sent home from practice Monday, spent the night on the bathroom floor, ended up at the doctor's on Tuesday with a blood pressure of 70/50, had 2 IV's and some ant-nausea medicine pumped into him, was wheeled out of the doctor's office by mother Judy in an double-wide wheel chair, and then went home and crashed for another day and a half. Oh well. He's feeling better now! The good news is that he got to ride up to the game and back in style in the family truckster, instead of on the stinky school bus.

Because of their win, however, they clinched the number 4 playoff spot in their region and now get to play Lone Peak . . . and hopefully not get squished. Good luck! Football prevails for another week!
