"SALT LAKE CITY — The first of more than a dozen bills aimed at asserting Utah's sovereign rights received Gov. Gary Herbert's signature Friday with assurance that he can keep the state out of costly litigation that may follow.
The statute created by SB11 (le.utah.gov/~2010/htmdoc/sbillhtm/SB0011.htm), sponsored by Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, exempts guns and ammunition manufactured and sold in Utah from federal firearms regulations and challenges current constitutional interpretation of interstate commerce.
Herbert, who received the bill last Tuesday, said the decision came after careful review of the potential fallout from the controversial legislation.
"There are times when the state needs to push back against continued encroachment from the federal government. Sending the message that we will stand up for a proper balance between the state and federal government is a good thing," he said. . . (Courtesy of the Deseret News)"
Sometimes you just have to watch your back. You never know when the federal government is going to step in and take your rights away. Just yesterday, three armed federal agents came to our door demanding that we give up our guns, our property, our freedom of speech, religion, and all our voting rights. It was a terrible experience. I was ready to be South Carolina and secede right then and there.
Thanks to Governor Herbert and the geniuses we call the Utah State legislature, we can now live a little safer. As long as your guns are made and assembled in Utah, those darn Feds can't take them away from you. You see this fist I'm shaking, you mind controlling democrats in Washington, you!
On a serious note, I happened to run into my gun-crimes-prosecuting-uncle tonight at the Utah basketball game and I asked him what he thought about this recent signature news story. He said, "Well first of all, as a federal prosecutor, we can't prosecute people with Utah made guns committing crimes in the state anyway. That's an existing law."
I asked, "So you mean to tell me that despite this law doing absolutely nothing it really does absolutely nothing?"
He replied, "I think our Utah leaders need to look out the window and see which flag is higher on the flagpole." He then made a comment about South Carolina, which I stole and put in the first paragraph, above.
