We had quite an exciting night last night. Would you like to hear about it? Around 9:15, there were tons of sirens in our neighborhood. James immediately went outside to see what was going on. I followed a few minutes later. There were at least 10 cop cars across the street (across 3100). There were cops walking around with dogs and everything. A cop drove through our complex and asked us if we'd seen anyone run through there. We said no, but James asked who they were looking for and the cop said - hispanic male, white shirt, blue jeans. We went inside, hoping not to run in to the guy they were looking for.
We piddled around our house, put some laundry away, checked e-mail, watched part of the news, and then decided to watch a movie. At around 10:45, we heard a low flying helicopter and saw out the window that it has a big spotlight. We both jumped up and looked out the window to see the helicopter, but instead we saw something else. There was a man bolting through the school grounds. He was running pretty fast alongside the school and then kept running into the field. He ran around and even backtracked a little before he just stopped and sat on the ground in the middle of the school grounds. He was wearing a white shirt and dark pants. James decided to call the police.
The lady took all the information about what just happened, but said she thought they'd already caught the guy they were looking for earlier, but said for us to keep an eye on the man in the field. We kept watching him. He lit up a cigarette and looked like he had a cell phone. He moved a little and laid down a couple of times, but mostly just sat there.
The dispatch lady called us back and asked if he was still there. She said that he was a man of interest and they were going to come and pick him up. James said in the background he heard another guy say that "he fits the description of the driver." The dispatch lady also told us to please stay in our home and she would call us again if they needed anything. She actually called us back a couple of times while we kept watching. She had James describe the layout of the school grounds, any other exits, and where the guy was.
It took until about 11:20 and "the valley" police moved in. First we saw two cops in our neighbors courtyard, looking over the fence. Then we saw 4 more, one with a dog, coming up the side of the school. The dog was pulling it's officer so hard that he could hardly restrain it. They got to the edge of the school building (the whole time, James is describing what's going on to the lady on the phone and telling her where the guy is in relation to the oncoming cops), they spotted him with their bright lights, he stood up (we of course couldn't hear anything that was going on), put his hands in the air, they cuffed him without argument and walked off with him. The cops in our neighbors yard left and a few more showed up on the school grounds that we hadn't seen before. The lady on the phone said thanks and it was over. We just sat very nervously for a while wondering what happened, and then we went to bed.
